Helen's students planted and maintain the xeriscapes at Meridian Academy. Xeriscape

Helen Fisher teaches classes in horticulture, science and math. She first taught school on an island in the South Pacific. That was in 1975! It was another 25+ years before she returned to the classroom as a teacher. Helen worked for ten years with the Bureau of Land Management as a Natural Resource Specialist managing desert riparian areas in Idaho. Helen has a Ph.D. in Soil Science from the University of Florida, Gainesville (Gator Land – orange and blue too). In Florida, she studied wetland soils and the trees growing in them. Helen also has degrees in soil science from the University of  Melbourne, Australia and in chemistry from Monash University, Australia.

Helen has spent her life on two continents – about equally split between Australia and North America. She still visits her mother and siblings in Australia, but has called Idaho home since 1987, rearing two Idaho kids and enjoying our wonderful outdoor environment. Her passion for life is the reason she teaches. She hopes that knowing the earth and its life systems will help young people find more meaning and joy in their own existences. As someone who has enjoyed the benefits of education, Helen hopes to help her students find education valuable and perhaps satisfying for themselves.
